Evacuation from the cities started when the Germans started to use a tactic called Blitz. It is called this because blitz means lightning in German so it was the lightning attack. So what they would do is drop thousands of bombs from aircraft called Bombers. Most evacuees went to the south- west where there are few cities so it wasn't too big a target for the Germans who where aiming for big cities to destroy weaponry factories and ships.

Lots of people where evacuated including children, pregnant women, the disabled, the blind and the death. 800,000 children where evacuated but many returned after a few weeks. when children arrived they'd be taken to the town hall where people ,with room in there house, would have to pick one or two of them quite often siblings where separated. Some people with no children of there own would be delighted to look after them but some would rather live alone.
